Tinnitus Relief Therapist Resources

Tinnitus is the perception of noise or ringing in the ears. It can be perceived as buzzing, roaring or scratching sound (among others). It is an internal sound that can affect one or both ears intermittently or continuously. And contrary to popular belief, tinnitus is actually a symptom of an underlying condition like; noise-induced hearing loss, ear or brain injury, as well as circulation issues rather than a condition in itself. The volume of the sound can fluctuate. It is often most noticeable at night or during periods of quiet.

Tinnitus is a common problem that affects between 15 to 20 percent of the population. Tinnitus, hearing loss and hearing in general are unique to each person.

What Causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus can be categorized into two groups; primary and secondary. Most tinnitus is primary tinnitus, where no cause can be identified aside from hearing loss. Secondary tinnitus is associated with a specific underlying cause that may be treatable.

Tinnitus may be caused by different parts of the hearing system.

Most tinnitus associated with the hearing system happens in the inner ear. Damage and death of the sensory hair cells in the inner ear can also cause tinnitus.

One of the primary causes of tinnitus is completely preventable. Excessive exposure to loud noise can damage these sensory hair cells and cause tinnitus. Using ear protection and taking extra precautions to protect your ears and hearing in loud and noisy environments can go a very long way to preserve your hearing health.

Medications may also damage inner ear hair cells and cause tinnitus. There are over the counter drugs and prescribed medications that can cause this type of damage known as ototoxicity.

Other Potential Causes:

  • Ear Infections
  • Earwax touching the Eardrum
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Otosclerosis
  • Tumors

Tinnitus that pulsates or sounds like a heartbeat may be more serious. It could be due to a tumor or abnormal growth in the region of the ear. Be sure to see a physician immediately if this is how you perceive tinnitus.

Tinnitus Relief Options

Be cautious of claims to cure tinnitus as there is no known cure. However, there are multiple options and many online resources that can help individuals with tinnitus.

Sound therapies can help with tinnitus and include things like background music, low volume noise or masking sounds as a potential treatment option. Other individuals with tinnitus and hearing loss have made improvements with the use of hearing aids that include tinnitus masking. The effects of tinnitus on quality of life may also be improved by cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) counseling, which usually involves a series of weekly sessions led by a trained professional.
